back in the olden days when schools taught kids how to write instead of just fill in blanks for some boring test, I had a teacher in 6th grade who had us write a significantly sized creative writing project every week. We’d be given a title or them and were pretty much free to do what we wanted, within certain tasteful boundaries.

however, this being 6th grade, when you wanted to come up with names AND have any sort of a drama, you dared not use a name that even SOUNDED like one of your classmates, lest you end up like Martin in the Simpsons.

So I would come up with the craziest mofo names I could and settled on “Sylvester” as my main “Male Character” name since there was no way in hell in 1979 in the ‘burbs any kid was named Sylvester.

Yay! for more people I know getting in on NaNo. I haven’t even had the time/energy to blog lately, so I don’t know how I’m going to get a whole novel out of me.

And I think you’re completely right about the naming of characters. It’s always the hardest part of the story for me, and I tend to gravitate toward the same names also.
